Launched in Fall 2023 at Incline High School by Ana Porras and Lourdes Avenier, the HOPA (Hispanic Outreach and Professional Advancement) program is dedicated to fostering meaningful connections between the school’s Hispanic student population and local professionals. The program’s mission is to provide a structured framework that supports academic achievement while empowering students to excel beyond the classroom.
In the Fall of 2024, HOPA became part of the Incline Education Fund (IEF) as a key component of our College and Career Prep initiatives. IEF financially supports the program and sources mentors from the Incline community, partnering with organizations like the local chapters of the American Association of University Women-Tahoe Nevada (AAUW), Rotary Clubs, and local business groups. Together, these community partners provide invaluable one-on-one mentorship to first-generation college-bound students.
HOPA mentors offer personalized guidance to students, helping them navigate the college application process, adapt to the challenges of higher education, and strategically prepare for life beyond high school. Mentors assist with a range of critical areas, including:
For students focused on entering the workforce directly after high school, mentors also help with:
To be considered for HOPA, students must be nominated by their teachers based on academic excellence, leadership potential, and community service. The selection committee carefully reviews nominations and pairs students in grades 10-12 with mentors who align with their career interests and aspirations.
